DJI Flip How to Use: Foldable Guards, Controls & Vlogging Tips

Setting up the DJI Flip

  1. Charge the battery and your controller.
  2. Install DJI Fly on your phone and sign in.
  3. Switch on the drone and controller, then activate the aircraft in the app.
  4. Update the firmware when prompted.
  5. Remove the gimbal protector and fold out the arms with their guards.
  6. Insert a microSD card. The internal storage is small, so a card is needed for regular use.

Your Flip may come with a standard RC-N3 controller that uses your phone or with the screen-equipped DJI RC 2, depending on the combo you chose.

Your first flight

  • Choose an open area with good GPS signal.
  • Take off from the ground, or from your palm if you are confident and your model supports it.
  • Fly in Normal mode at first and test Return to Home from a short distance.
  • Land with plenty of battery left.

The built-in guards add protection when you fly near people or objects, but they do not make the drone crash-proof. Keep a safe distance and never fly over crowds.

Vlogging and creator tips

  • Use subject tracking modes to follow yourself while you walk, cycle or run, but stay clear of obstacles.
  • Try QuickShots such as Dronie and Circle for quick social clips.
  • Shoot 4K at 30 fps for everyday use and higher frame rates for slow motion.
  • Take a few seconds to check your framing before you press record.

Looking after the Flip

  • Propellers and guards: check them before every flight for cracks or deformation.
  • Gimbal cover: refit it after each flight to protect the camera. Our gimbal cover guide explains why this matters.
  • Battery: store at around half charge for longer breaks. See DJI drone battery care.
  • Cleaning: wipe the lens and sensors with a soft, dry cloth.
