Propellers are the cheapest part on your drone and the most important one for safe flight. A chipped or bent blade causes vibration, noisy flight, shaky video and shorter battery life, and in the worst case a crash. This guide shows you how to check and replace DJI drone propellers on Mini, Air, Mavic, Avata, Flip and Neo models.
When should you replace DJI propellers?
- You see a crack, chip, nick or bend on any blade, even a small one.
- The drone has had a crash or hard landing, even if the propellers look fine.
- The drone vibrates, makes an unusual noise or footage looks wobbly ("jello").
- The blades look cloudy, stiff, scratched or discoloured after long use.
- The propellers are very old. Many pilots replace them every 50 flight hours or so as a precaution.
Never fly with a damaged propeller. A small crack can break apart at full speed.
What you need
- A full set of original propellers for your exact drone model.
- The small screwdriver that comes with screw-mounted propellers, if your drone uses screws.
- A clean, flat surface and good light.

Step 1: Check which mounting type your drone uses
DJI uses two main methods:
- Screw-mounted propellers are held by small screws. Many drones in the Mini family and several FPV models use this method.
- Quick-release propellers lock onto the motor with a press-and-twist action and need no tools. Many Air and Mavic models use this method.
Always check your drone's manual to confirm which type you have.
Step 2: Understand the marked and unmarked propellers
Each drone has two kinds of propeller that spin in opposite directions. They usually look similar but have a mark, ring or label to tell them apart. Marked propellers go on the marked motors and unmarked ones go on the unmarked motors. Fitting them the wrong way round can stop the drone from taking off or cause it to flip.
How to replace screw-mounted propellers
- Switch off the drone and remove the battery.
- Note which arms have marked motors.
- Use the screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the old propeller. Keep the screws safe.
- Lift off the old propeller.
- Place the correct new propeller on the motor, matching marked to marked.
- Refit the screws and tighten until snug. Do not overtighten, as that can strip the thread or warp the hub.
- Repeat for the other propellers.
How to replace quick-release propellers
- Switch off the drone and remove the battery.
- Press the old propeller down and rotate it in the direction shown on the hub to release it.
- Lift it off the motor.
- Fit the new propeller by pressing down and rotating it in the locking direction until it clicks into place.
- Gently pull on the propeller to confirm it is secure.
After you fit new propellers
- Check that every propeller is on the correct motor and spins freely by hand.
- Power on and take off in an open area. Hover at about one metre and listen for vibration.
- Land and check that the propellers are still tight.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing up marked and unmarked propellers.
- Overtightening screws.
- Using propellers made for a different drone model. Always match the model name.
- Buying very cheap copies. Poorly balanced blades vibrate and can damage the motors and gimbal. Use original DJI propellers.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to replace all four propellers at once?
Replace the damaged blade at the very least. If the propellers are old or the others show wear, replace all four so they wear evenly.
Can I use Mini 3 propellers on a Mini 4 Pro?
Do not assume so. Always use the propellers listed for your exact model.
How can I tell if the propellers caused my shaky video?
If the footage wobbles but the gimbal moves normally, damaged propellers are the most common cause. Worn gimbal rubbers can also contribute. See common DJI drone problems and fixes.
