DJI Mini 4 Pro Beginner's Guide: Setup, Controls & First Flight

The DJI Mini 4 Pro is one of the most popular compact drones for beginners and travellers. It is small enough to fit in a jacket pocket, yet it has a 1/1.3-inch camera, omnidirectional obstacle sensing and a flight time of up to 34 minutes with the standard battery (according to DJI's published specifications). This guide walks you through setup, your first flight and the habits that keep your drone in good shape.

DJI Mini 4 Pro at a glance

Takeoff weight Under 249 g with the standard battery
Camera 1/1.3-inch CMOS, 48 MP photos, 4K video up to 60 fps
Max flight time Up to 34 minutes (standard battery)
Obstacle sensing Omnidirectional dual vision sensors plus 3D infrared
Video transmission DJI O4, up to 20 km under ideal conditions (FCC)
Wind resistance Up to 10.7 m/s
App DJI Fly

Step 1: Charge, install the app and activate

  1. Charge the Intelligent Flight Battery and your remote controller fully before the first flight.
  2. Install the DJI Fly app on your phone from the Play Store or App Store.
  3. Switch on the aircraft and the controller, then follow the on-screen steps in DJI Fly. The drone must be activated online with your DJI account, so keep mobile data or Wi-Fi on for this step.
  4. Accept any firmware update that DJI Fly offers. Do not switch anything off while it installs.

Step 2: Prepare the drone

  • Remove the gimbal protector before you power on. Starting the drone with the cover in place is the most common cause of gimbal errors.
  • Unfold the front arms first, then the rear arms, and check that all four propellers are not cracked or bent.
  • Insert a good-quality microSD card. The drone has only a small amount of internal storage, so a card is strongly recommended for 4K video.
  • Place the drone on flat ground with open sky above and the tail towards you.

Step 3: Learn the controls

Most pilots use Mode 2. The left stick controls height (up and down) and rotation (left and right). The right stick moves the drone forward, backward and sideways. Practise gentle, small movements in an open field before you try anything fancy.

  • Tap Takeoff in DJI Fly and hold when asked. The drone lifts to about eye level and hovers.
  • Fly a slow square, then a circle, keeping the drone in sight all the time.
  • Tap Return to Home to bring the drone back to the recorded home point, or Land to land where you are.

Flight modes: Normal, Cine and Sport

Normal is best for learning. Cine softens stick response for smooth video. Sport unlocks higher speed (up to 16 m/s) and, on most DJI drones, limits automatic obstacle braking, so use it only in wide open areas. Our guide to DJI flight modes explains the differences in more detail.

Camera tips for better footage

  • Shoot 4K at 30 fps for everyday video and 4K at 60 fps when you want to slow footage down.
  • Use true vertical shooting for Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
  • Record in D-Log M if you plan to colour grade; otherwise stay with the standard profile for ready-to-share clips.
  • Try QuickShots such as Dronie, Circle and Rocket for easy cinematic clips.

Safety features you should know

  • Obstacle sensing: the drone can detect obstacles around it and brake or fly around them, depending on your settings. It is not a replacement for watching where you fly.
  • Return to Home: set a sensible return altitude in the app before takeoff, above the tallest tree or building around you.
  • Low battery warnings: bring the drone back when the battery reaches about 30 percent, not when the drone forces a landing.

Standard battery vs Plus battery

With the standard battery the Mini 4 Pro is under 249 g. The larger Intelligent Flight Battery Plus gives longer flights (up to 45 minutes according to DJI) but takes the drone over 249 g, which can change which drone rules apply to you. Read our beginner guide to drone rules in India before you fly.

After the flight

  1. Land, wait for the motors to stop, then power off the drone.
  2. Fold the arms (rear first, then front), put the gimbal protector back on and wipe off dust.
  3. Check each propeller for chips. A damaged propeller causes vibration, shaky video and extra battery drain. See how to replace DJI drone propellers.
  4. Store the battery at around half charge if you will not fly for a week or more. Our battery care guide has the full list.

Frequently asked questions

Is the DJI Mini 4 Pro good for beginners?

Yes. Obstacle sensing, automatic return to home and simple QuickShots make it forgiving, but you should still learn the basics in an open area first.

How often should I replace the propellers?

Replace them as soon as you see a crack, chip or bend, and after any crash, even if they look fine. Many pilots also swap them after about 50 hours of flying.

Why does my gimbal show an error when I switch on the drone?

Check that the gimbal protector is removed and that nothing is blocking the camera. If the error stays, see our guide on gimbal covers and gimbal problems.

Can I fly the Mini 4 Pro in the rain?

No. The drone is not waterproof. Avoid rain, fog and strong wind.
