DJI Neo How to Use: Palm Takeoff, Controls & Tips

The DJI Neo is one of the smallest and simplest drones DJI has made. At about 135 g it is lighter than most smartphones, it can take off from your palm, and it has propeller guards built in. It is aimed at first-time pilots and creators who want easy selfie and vlog shots. This guide explains how to set it up and fly it.

DJI Neo key specifications

Takeoff weight About 135 g
Camera 1/2-inch sensor, 12 MP photos, 4K video at 30 fps
Gimbal Single-axis mechanical tilt
Max flight time About 18 minutes (about 17 minutes with the propeller guards)
Wind resistance Up to 8 m/s
Internal storage 22 GB
Live view DJI O4, up to 1080p at 60 fps

How you can control the Neo

  • Your phone: use the DJI Fly app for simple tap-to-fly controls and intelligent shooting modes.
  • RC-N3 remote: gives you stick control and a longer range, depending on your combo.
  • Goggles and motion controller: compatible with DJI Goggles 3 for an immersive view, if you want to try FPV.

First-time setup

  1. Charge the battery and any controllers.
  2. Install DJI Fly, sign in and activate the drone.
  3. Update the firmware if prompted.
  4. Fit the propeller guards if you want extra protection.
  5. Check the drone settings and the microSD card, if you use one.

Flying with palm takeoff

  1. Choose an open area and switch on the Neo.
  2. Follow the DJI Fly prompts to start palm takeoff and hold the drone level in your hand.
  3. Release only when the drone tells you it is ready, then step back to give it space.
  4. To land, bring your open palm underneath the drone as it descends.

Always keep fingers away from the propellers and never launch from your hand near your face.

Shooting tips

  • Use the intelligent modes in DJI Fly for easy, repeatable shots.
  • Film in daylight for the cleanest image. The small sensor works best with good light.
  • Use vertical recording for social media.
  • Keep the drone close to the subject, because the Neo is light and wind can push it around.

Care and common spare parts

  • Propellers: they are small and light, so replace any that chip or bend. Keep a spare set in your bag.
  • Propeller guards: remove them if you need maximum flight time and fit them for safety near people or objects.
  • Storage: keep the drone clean, dry and out of direct sun.
